The Alamo

In San Antonio, Texas, there is an old Spanish mission. It is called the Alamo. Lots of men fought there in 1836. The Texans fought for their independence from Mexico. They wanted independence because they were unhappy that there was new a law limiting immigration from the U.S. The Texans also believed President Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna did not follow the constitution. So the Texans started the rebellion. The Mexicans attacked the Alamo. One hundred-eighty men defended the Alamo. Mexico had 5,000 troops to attack. One legend said Colonel Travis drew his sword and drew a line. It meant that if someone crossed that line, the Texans would defend the Alamo. Only one person did not cross. On March 6, the Mexican army attacked. It was a scary war. All the defenders died, and six hundred Mexican soldiers died, too. Some people say there were actually one thousand-five hundred Mexican soldiers who had died. The Texans lost the Alamo, but it showed the Texans had the courage to defend their beliefs. Some heroes who fought at the Alamo were James Bowie, Davy Crockett, William B.Travis.
